P & O Zeebrugge Ferry Upgrades

14 posts in this topic

Good news for fans of the Pride of York and Bruges - they're getting an extensive upgrade!

More info here: http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/p-o-ferries-to-upgrade-pride-of-york-and-pride-of-bruges-to-secure-hull-route-into-2020s/story-29939754-detail/story.html

I last sailed on Bruges this August and onYork last November. Bruges is the better boat of the two for me, both could do with some updates but they handle themselves very well and I for one am pleased that they'll be with us for a bit longer.

If anyone has info more information about the refits it would be good to know

I read on Facebook they are extensively refurbishing the passenger areas hopefully to keep them in service for 5 more years.

I might eventually get on them.

Very good news, they're great ships to travel on and of course this is our one and only link with Belgium. I hope whatever they do is tasteful and not too much along the 'service station' style of some other ships. The ships had laminate flooring installed in the stairwells a few years ago and I hope this is replaced with proper carpets.

Good news for the ships, must definitely try and travel on them sometime. The fact that they have lasted this long is very impressive - certainly proves that the Bretagne should/could easily last for a good 5-10 years.

Makes you wonder though , what will eventually replace them, and when...

If you have never seen it there is a Discovery Channel documentary, still shown occasionally, covering the last major refit for the Pride Of York on the Tyne......well worth a watch.

Pride of York left Zeebrugge this evening bound for Gdansk and refit. Quite a gathering of late 80's cruise ferries taking place there this month!

I believe she should have gone slightly earlier but was delayed due to maintenance on Pride of Hull overrunning. Pride of Bruges which was covering the Hull on Rotterdam has switched back to Zeebrugge tonight and is due off herself to Gdansk once the York returns.

Also noticed today that P and o ran Pride of Rotterdam down to the Keepel Velrome boatyard in Rotterdam for a quick 'splash and dash' examination by the looks of things. In and out of the dry dock in only a few hours!

Was in Hull today, and by chance both Pride of York and Hull were late in, I guess as a result of Storm Doris. Got to see the former go into the lock and the latter moor up. Both recently refitted and sporting new logos. However Pride of York- one week out of dry dock appeared to have quite a bit of blue paint missing off starboard bow (not pictured), grey undercoat showing- surely it couldn't have come off already! I guess it's not the easiest thing to fix either. Otherwise she looked very good for her age.

Great to see that P&O are looking after these two. They were quite a bold addition to the North Sea when introduced and I shall miss them almost as much as I miss the Tor sisters when they finally go. Here's to many more years!

Booked on the Pride of York for our holidays this September. Never been on this route before but a lot less driving from Durham than down to Portsmouth for the Bretagne.

Hull Daily Mail showed a few pictures of the Pride of York post refit. Looks good but not much detail on the extent of what has been done. Apparently there is a relaunch of Pride of York in Hull and Pride of Bruges in Zeebrugge tomorrow.

From recent trip on her it looks like she has had:-

  • Exterior repaint with new P&O logo and flag.
  • New full width shop replacing the separate shops it had before. You have to walk through it to get to Starbucks and the Show Bar. Very airport style.
  • Refurbished Blue Deck Bar with WiFi Zone replacing the cinema. They were still working on one corner of the bar so it was blocked off.
  • Refurbished and enlarged Brasserie fitted out like the recently refitted Dover ships.
  • Refurbished Club Cabins, some appear to have new double beds fitted were there used to be a single.
  • The Green Deck lobby looked a lot brighter so I think they've put new lighting in.
  • The Boulevard Bar has closed and is now an extra seating area for Starbucks.
  • Casino and games machine area have swapped places. New gambling machine area in one of the lobby's.
  • Lots of new carpet around.
  • Lots of new signage in the public areas and murals on the doors appropriate to the deck you are on.

They've probably done other things but that's what I noticed.

Pride of Bruges is off service and in Rotterdam for engineering repairs apparently. Due back 3rd June. Auto Bay has been charterd to cover her freight runs, but not good to have her out of action over Spring half term week, bet there would have been a fair few mini cruises booked on in that period.
