Andy
Jean-Marc Roue, president of Brittany Ferries, has stated in an interview with French Newspaper 'le Marin' that is looking likely that an order for an environmentally friendly ferry would be placed in 2016. This would be to replace the Bretagne (but likely to be an 'Pegasis v2' for Spain, with Pont-Aven transferred to St Malo). http://www.lemarin.fr/secteurs-activites/shipping/22292-brittany-ferries-commande-probable-dun-nouveau-ferry-en-2016
hf_uk
Interesting. I guess depending on which yard is chosen that would mean a possible delivery for 2018? Not too much later than Pegasis, and of course a lot of the 'groundwork' has already been done.
litecactus
That doesn't solve the issue of Bretagne entirely, she will need replacing in 2016. Perhaps a swap like Etretat in the Med/Baltic. I think that PA will be a good replacement for Bretagne
crechbleiz
As long as Bretagne is running on diesel instead of heavy fuel oil, she can operate on Ports-St Malo for the foreseable future. The limitation will be the bunkering costs. However, the charter fees paid by BF to her owners must be lower than the fees paid for PA or Arm. Although there was an intention to build Pegasis V1 in St-Nazaire, it might not be possible this time. STX St-Nazaire have a good order book beyond 2019. Pegasis V2 may be built somewhere else. Meyerwerft maybe?
neilcvx
Would be nice to see it Clyde built bit of a long shot but you can live in hope.

jonno
Or STX Europe? Also I can see Bretagne being used right up till the day the new vessel starts service. I agree, with the dock time schedule for the Arm', MSM and Pont, BF will be in need of all of their fleet.
hf_uk
I agree, with the dock time schedule for the Arm', MSM and Pont, BF will be in need of all of their fleet. Also we don't know if Etretat's charter will be renewed.
georgem7
Would the design for Pegasis be the same or much different ??? Also we don't know if Etretat's charter will be renewed. When does Etretat's charter terminate?
hf_uk
I honestly don't know (yesterday would have been nice!), but I know it is far shorter than the Baie de Seine's.
neilcvx
I think it's a year long charter so March ish? I may be wrong .
Seashore
STX St-Nazaire have a good order book beyond 2019. Pegasis V2 may be built somewhere else. Meyerwerft maybe? If you think STX's yard is full with at least one major cruise ship a year... 2016 - Harmony of the Seas (Oasis class) 225,000 grt 2017 - MSC Merviglia (MSC Vista class) 168,000 grt 2018 - 4th Oasis class 225,000 grt 2018 - 1st Celebrity (Edge class) 117,000 grt 2019 - 2nd Merviglia (MSC Vista class) 168,000 grt 2020 - 2nd Celebrity (Edge class) 117,000 grt And MSC have two unconfirmed options on 2x more Vista class ships. Pegasis' spot looks to have been given over to Celebrity Edge, which was announced not long after the Brittany Ferries order was cancelled. ...then check out Meyer's, also churning out one for each of its two yards! 2015 - Norwegian Escape 163,300 grt - Papenburg 2016 - Ovation of the Seas (Quantum class) 167,800 grt - Papenburg 2016 - Mein Schieff 5 99,000 grt - Turku 2017 - Norwegian Bliss 163,300 grt- Papenburg 2017 - Mein Schieff 6 99,000 grt - Turku 2018 - 3rd Norwegian (Breakaway Plus class) 163,300 grt- Papenburg 2018 - Mein Schieff 7 99,000 grt - Turku 2019 - 4th Norwegian (Breakaway Plus class) 163,300 grt- Papenburg 2019 - Mein Schieff 8 99,000 grt - Turku 2019 - 4th Quantum class 167,800 grt - Papenburg 2019 - 1st Aida eco 180,000 grt - Papenburg 2020 - 2nd Aida eco 180,000 grt - Papenburg 2020 - 1st Costa eco ????? grt - Turku 2021 - 2nd Costa eco ????? grt - Turku ...and Fincantieri's two yards are pretty busy too, especially since Carnival almost always build there but have now gone to Meyer, each yard doing one ship a year: 2016 - Koningsdam 99,000 grt 2016 - Carnival Vista 135,000 grt 2017 - 4th Princess (Royal class) 143,000 grt 2017 - MSC Seaside 154,000 grt 2018 - 2nd Seaside 154,000 grt 2018 - 2nd Vista (Carnival Vista class) 135,000 grt 2018 - 2nd Koningsdam (Pinacle class) 99,000 grt 2019 - 1st Carnival eco ????? grt 2019 - 2nd Carnival eco ????? grt 2020 - 1st Virgin Cruises 110,000 grt 2020 - 3rd Carnival eco ????? grt 2021 - 2nd Virgin Cruises 110,000 grt 2021 - 4th Carnival eco ????? grt 2022 - 3rd Virgin Cruises 110,000 grt 2022 - 5th Carnival eco ????? grt Any of those major European builders are going to struggle to get a large ferry in. Perhaps we're looking at Spain, Poland or Norway for a new BF ship??
crechbleiz
This is going to be a problem indeed. Not many shipyards can build ships of this size/complexity/type of propulsion in such a short time. Maybe BF have managed to secure a slot in St-Nazaire.
neilcvx
I wonder if Fergusons could manage?

neilcvx
I wouldn't rule out the Koreans either. I'm sure they are capable of building it to BFs standards.
hf_uk
I'm sure they are capable of building it to BFs standards. Yeah just perhaps not the North Koreans eh?
Seashore
STX in Korea are very good at churning out big tankers and freighters, their yards are massive but also pretty full order books too. Mitsubushi in Japan is a definite rule out, they've said so themselves. They're building the new Aida Prima and sister and have stated they have made a monumental loss on building both of them, so they've said they're going to stick with their core business of building bulk carriers and not building anything "passenger" again for the foreseeable.
neilcvx
Who does that leave then?
jonno
Navantia in Spain, they've specialised in military vessels including subs but are now entering the passenger market.
Seashore
In Europe, no one who specialises in passenger ships. Unless they have managed to secure a slot at one of those yards, perhaps whilst a dry dock is empty. I'll eat my hat if it's Papenburg because it's literally back-to-back building a succession of 163k+ grt ships for Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, plus they've just secured the order on those four 180k grt ships for Carnival's Aida and Costa which will be the world's largest in terms of passengers. As one ship leaves thee build hall it's straight on the fit out quay; they're running a very efficient conveyor belt operation building some pretty radical ships. Fincantieri are full too, Carnival almost always build their ships there but the same with Papenburg which is where all of Celebrity's ships have come from and now they're having to be built by STX France. Essentially though STX France seem to be picking up the less risky stuff. Whilst Harmony of the Seas and sister will be largest cruise ships in the world at 225k grt, it was STX who built the older sisters Oasis and Allure in Turku, so essentially it's the same firm but different yard building them. The MSC Meraviglia and sister are evolutions on the previous Fantasia class ships which were built at St Nazaire, whilst the slightly smaller new MSC Seaside and sister are quite different and are being built by Fincantieri. Celebrity Edge and sister seem to be there because it was the yard with a gap, and like I say I think Edge got Pegasis's build slot. Interestingly though, the 9x new ships that Carnival Corp have on order at Meyer Papenburg (4x) and Fincantieri (5x, excluding the 2x Pinnacle class for Holland Ameria and 2x Vista class for Carnival Cruises) are all to be the world's first hybrid LNG powered cruise ships. Since the four announced for Papenburg are all destined to be home ported in Germany and Italy, then it's not a resounding endorsement for STX France who were supposed to have done a lot of the groundwork on the concept for Pegasis. Khaines
Pity Austal don't build passenger ships. Disagreements about the 102 aside, they do build top class vessels for the US Navy and they build car/pax ferries for companies all over the world. Doesn't seem that they do conventional passenger vessels though, they all seem to be HSCs. As said arguments about the new Condor boat aside, they are world renowned. Pity they don't do cruise ferries, think they could build some pretty good ones.
hf_uk
I am sure that after all the work done with STX before on the Pegasis project feasibility study and LNG design preps etc, that STX France will manage to fit in the build.
