NEWBUILD: Announcement in 2016?

Rumours amongst crew that Normandie will leave the fleet before Bretagne ..... Discuss!

Such a plan would surely involve Armorique switching to Caen and Bretagne switching to Roscoff I'd have thought. Caen needs quite a specialist configuration and not many other ferries out here for a direct swap from Normandie to a.n.other second-hand ferry.

Cotentin converted into another Armorique could be another possibility?

Another way of interpreting the rumour is simply that Bretagne ain't going anywhere fast and there's another member of the fleet that is inferior to her that could do with being disposed of first.

You could argue that with scrubbers Normandie is the easier sell.

Indeed, certainly for sale within the scrubber zone. Yet again, within the scrubber zone I'd have thought the market for both Bretagne and Normandie would be limited.

Surely the configuration of Armorique's vehicle decks make her unsuited to year-round use on the Caen route? Twin full height freight decks must be a prerequisite for a Normandie replacement?

If Armorique is not up to it then I think you'd have a hard job finding any other ferry that could be purchased second-hand that has the right twin-level drive-through vehicle deck configuration, the right overnight cruise ferry passenger configuration and that is also Ouistreham-max or less in length.

Would they be adaptable or is that too expensive ?

I wonder if all the older ships are available for the right price?

I'd imagine the entire fleet would be available for the right price. If somebody offered more than an asset was worth most companies would sell.

One of the main differences between Armorique and Cotentin is that the former had a lower height upper vehicle deck in order to mount the accommodation block above. I believe Cotentin has two full height vehicle decks but of course a smaller accommodation block. So to convert Armorique you would presumably have to knock her block off!

According to the signs on her upper vehicle deck she has clear height of 3.0m and can accept a maximum axle load of 1.6 tons, indicating substantial strengthening would be required in addition to increasing the height somehow without having to remove the accommodation - which may well be impossible within the limitations of the hull design. Assuming the hull could support it, I wonder how much they saved in build cost with her specification tailored for Plymouth services and whether they regret it now.

I can guarantee you that 'Normandie' will NOT be leaving the fleet before 'Bretagne'.

There is however probably more of a market for Normandie than for Bretagne.

I can guarantee you that there are no guarantees in a company when profit rules above all else.

Normandie may be going before Bretagne. The question is when. It could be in 2,3 or 5 years. Who knows. By then Cotentin could be converted to increase her pax capacity, or a sister ship of MSM ordered. The development of the Le Havre route may also mean that the freight capacity for Ouistreham needs to be reduced.

Exactly. The rumour does not necessarily imply there is information to know or that any departure is imminent.

Only going by information received via Twitter in a DM, I've hidden the name of the BF Team member I spoke to. I have no reason to dis-believe him/her and the information they have shared with me in the past has never been untrue.

I wouldn't think any ship will be leaving for a while yet either but it's interesting to speculate which one it will be first.
