CAP FINISTERE: Yacht Rescue

Recommended Posts

The Cap Finistere responded to a distress call from the yacht 'Smile' on Monday night, whilst on passage from Roscoff to Bilbao. Three crew members were recovered by the ship's rescue boat and taken to Bilbao. The yacht has only partially sunk, but has recovery has been unsuccessful.

I think this sort of thing is more common for BF ships that we could imagine...hardly a week goes by without one of them being involved with some distress situation or other. The unusual thing about this one is that it seems to be pretty much in the middle of the Bay of Biscay. Mostly they are in the Channel. But it strikes me that the BF officers always respond to these situations with impeccable professionalism.

I'd be surprised if one of the senior officers (1st or 2nd?) was not involved. It's an interesting question though. Central control of the operation will have been taken by the appropriate French coastguard coordination centre I'd have imagined (CROSS Etel).
