CAP FINISTERE: Bomb scare

Recommended Posts

This incident on Wednesday 16th December was reported in Cotentin press. Translation by Bing has usual discrepancies.

Cap Finistère

Wednesday, December 16 at 5.30 p.m., the ferry "Cape Finisterre" company Brittany Ferries, which carried out the connection Portsmouth (United Kingdom) - Bilbao (Spain) reported to Cross Jobourg found a suspicious package on board.

375 passengers put away

Without delay, the master of the vessel decided to evacuate 375 passengers in a secure area and diverted to move closer to the coast. The crew of the ferry proceeded to a fuller investigation of the ship to ensure that no other suspicious packages is present on board.

A team of clearance divers

The maritime prefecture of the channel and the North Sea immediately sent a team of Navy clearance divers stationed at Cherbourg, which is projected on the ferry by helicopter EC-225 of Maupertus. In 30 minutes, the military were on area and were airlifted aboard the ferry, which was off the coast of Roscoff.

Nothing to worry about in the famous bag

Clearance divers have established a perimeter of exclusion around a ventilation duct containing a backpack identified as suspicious packages. An x-ray revealed that the bag contained no explosive charge and was safe. Within an hour, the situation was under control.

Once the operation is completed, the team of clearance divers was evacuated by helicopter. The ferry resumed its route to its final destination, Bilbao.

It must have been quite a scary experience.

Reassuring to read of the prompt action taken by BF and other emergency services.

I presume the safe area would be as far away as possible from the package?

Strikes me as someone being careless costing somebody (ultimately the tax payer) an awful lot of money. Yes, good to see the level of response to the situation, but a disgrace that it was necessary in the first place. I hope they manage to track down the culprit.
