1kerbut1 Report post Posted March 25, 2016 Funnily enough was on the floating bridge yesterday ( as we had 4 days in IoW ) and it was having a marine survey whilst we were on it .

GeoffHamer Report post Posted December 4, 2016 The present ferry will make its last crossings on 2 January and it will then be sold. A replacement passenger launch will run until the new ferry enters service in late March. https://www.iwfloatingbridge.co.uk/works-planned-to-prepare-for-new-floating-bridge/
adicat Report post Posted December 4, 2016 Wonder why they are not keeping old until March.
cvabishop Report post Posted December 4, 2016 As explained in the article, they need to carry out works to the bridge approaches to prepare for the new bridge.
adicat Report post Posted December 4, 2016 Wouldn't think much of a design change if any needed as not a lot you can come up with....a rectangle!
captjack Report post Posted December 5, 2016 The new bridge is wider for a start so one of the two chains have to be moved and the slip both sides have to be widened
eagleeye Report post Posted December 5, 2016 Obviously there is two big pits to tension the chains so at least one new one will have to be dug out and moved ..also they are segregating passengers and cars so they can load at the same time ..also resurfacing both slipways
adicat Report post Posted December 6, 2016 They can afford to now that they charge for foot passengers
eagleeye Report post Posted January 2, 2017 Last crossing of the old floating bridge tonight ..I actually went on the first one so will go down now for one of the last ones..
Khaines Report post Posted January 3, 2017 Old one being scrapped? They should use it for something like the old Sandbanks one, that is something to do with shellfish. Long and old history, shame to see it go for scrap.
eagleeye Report post Posted January 3, 2017 Not sure where it went...,but it's gone 😐

adicat Report post Posted March 23, 2017 Old one still in Gosport.....we can hope for a return of a vehicle floating bridge as the charge would be about the same for a car as the current Gosport Ferry charge.
TonyMWeaver Report post Posted March 23, 2017 Some better photos of the former Cowes Floating Bridge tied up in Gosport.

Cabin-boy Report post Posted March 28, 2017 Perhaps they might try floating it across the Solent just to check it works. 😉 (Presumably that's how they got rid of the other one.) Ed.
Cabin-boy Report post Posted March 28, 2017 That's obviously after someone has pulled the thing around the south coast first. I can't see anything on Marine Traffic that might be a tug pulling such a load and heading for Cowes. On another matter, am I too old to be contributing to this part of the forum? The description at the top of the Solent Scene page reads: Solent Scene A special child forum for discussions regarding Solent ferry activity, including Wightlink, the Gosport Ferry & Hovertravel. adicat Report post Posted March 28, 2017 Is this really the old floating bridge or is it Wightlinks new ferry as part of their 45m investment?
