Dover closed due to high winds

Recommended Posts

I recall previous closures of both Dover and Calais. It's not just the strength of the wind, I think direction is a cause too. Stong winds shearing across the harbour mouth is generally tbe reason.

The Port of Dover closes several times every year in strong winds. The entrances are narrow and exposed, with fast running tides across them. It is very common for ferries to take shelter in the Downs for several hours while waiting for conditions to improve.
