Just to bring this thread back around to the topic...

I've just amended our booking for the 26th as our vehicle height has changed to over 3m. It only cost £7 each way.

Result, sort of!

Checked in at Plymouth on the 25th. No one in the queue at 6am at all.

Explained the saga and promised that my booking reservations email will not have the note saying that my car is over the 1.83m limit according to BF (or Carweb that they use). I was advised to say the vehicle was a "leisure" vehicle!

They are of course right in including such a warning on the ticket as I may have added a roof rack etc.

Interestingly the Carweb dispute team never did reply within the  7-10 working days or at all. BF Customer services rescued the situation.

My suggestion is that if your manufactures handbook or the sales blurb shows a range of model heights then check that BF don't assume incorrectly that you now enter a different price bracket and more importantly that the final payment for the fare has not had the higher rate included in the balance. Easy to miss when payments are taken automatically on cards.

Morning all,

Here we go again.

Booking my trips for next year.

Get ticket and invoice Version 1- hooray.

Next day get Version 2 as an amendment and vehicle now has increased in height again. Talk about "computer says NO"!!!!

The extra charge of £41 "Will be taken".

Anyone have any idea how I get a refund after check in? I've tried Customer services and Reservations -all promise BUT it doesn't work.I sent all the car manufacturers info but that's a waste of time. Their bloody system just uses that god awful brainless system called CarWeb I reckon.

Anyone know Mike Bevins number?

Trip advisor keeps entering my head.

Good company BUT I dread a booking system like this.

What doesn't work? Do they not offer to change your booking to the vehicle dimensions you insist are correct with the added 'but we may need to check at the port' line?

I have no doubt that this CarWeb software has got your vehicle wrong - or maybe it is assuming you have roof bars which I think you mentioned before - either way I bet it is correct 98% of time and BF taking advantage of far fewer under declared vehicles 'getting away with it' - although I expect most people who under declare their vehicle dimensions do so unknowingly.

Hi Trev,

May have a result.

Heres what you do-from a very helpfully guy called Glen in BF Reservations.

Check what you want on line, for dates and best prices etc. Then book by telephone. They will then add a note  that you have checked your car size is in the right box and make a note as such on the booking. I'm not sure what the note will be but I should not get an automatic new version asking for more money (unless I go and fit roof bars).

Seems that the Berlingo type vehicle does cause a problem along with a few others that vary by model type. Most people claim not to know their height size it seems.

The use of an automatic correcting program after you've booked does allow rapid checking in. Just didn't want the agro of reclaiming the overcharged amount.

That is good news.

I did think that BF reservations are happy to see it your way. Landrover Discovery is another problem vehicle. Technically many of them are over 1.83m high but the newer models (so not all of them) have the ability to lower the suspension providing they drive at a low speed.

Each and every time CarWeb correctly tells BF that the Landrover Discovery owner has incorrectly declared their vehicle size but in reality when they turn up it is bang on or perhaps just under 1.83m...

It is a slight annoyance for you and other passengers with these sorts of vehicles but if you book via the telephone they can prevent CarWeb getting involved and instruct the check-in staff to check. OR you can book online and then call reservations and have the same conversation you had with Glenn.

Up date on "Car Web" data base being used for car sizes during booking..

After phoning, a log time ago, I was promised that a note would be added to my booking about my "disputed" car. I never saw such a note on any ticket or receipt I had downloaded neither was any extra money taken with my balance due. But last time checking in I got the usual shrug of the shoulder, peep at the roofline and on we go.

Well, I had cause to amend an upcoming trip and blow me down there was a note added on the  amendment page saying I now had "1 FREE  Car Web Dispute " or something like that. It came about asking for an accommodation change. Print ticket/receipt out and there it is "gone". Do the check in staff have "manage my booking" in front of them I wonder so that a change can be billed on the spot?

Odd, I need to lie down now!

Check in staff can change your booking if needed, including adding/removing a cabin. Last year one of our group couldn't travel and when we advised of this at check in the cabin was removed from the booking and refunded. This year, we tried to upgrade a cabin at check-in... it was possible, but for some reason quoted at several hundred quid, it was much cheaper onboard!

This is quite an  area, I own a VW transporter I used to book it on as an MPV but eventually got told off and made to book the van on as a camper and pay more than the Discovery  in the next lane which was higher. I've never understood why it should cost more to transport than the car that occupies as much space on deck 5.

What about the VW groupies who despise the notion of ground clearance, their vans scrape along the floor and yet they charged more than the discovery next to them?

It's not as if these vehicles are shoved  on to the freight deck is it.  If I could pay a few quid more to be on deck 3 I might be happier!!

They're at it again!

Got a couple of bookings for next year over the phone. Great.
What's this? On one booking my dear old Berlingo has gone and jumped up 5 cm in height and is now over the 1.83m height with the usual cost increase. Its also now been named on the ticket as a Berlingo Multispace instead of MPV.

I have given Bertie Berlingo a good talking to and told it to stop jumping up and down. Its confusing Brittany Ferries. It whispered that BF reservations made it so excited!
"I'm not really that height" Bertie said  "I know it does wind up my owner so much".

Bertie is asleep now and settled down to his normal height of 1.80 metres. The naughty bad fairies (BF)won't upset you again. Sleep tight Bertie.

Just ask them to measure it at the port and to charge accordingly. I'd also recommend you stop smoking whatever it is you are smoking. It's obvious that the dimensions are based on a model with roof bars.

Oh Scarlton how sensible you are. Tried all you suggest over the last years trips(7) but every time ,despite the promise to measure at the port I then get the odd booking amended by BF saying that they will collect the money for the additional amount from my card as its over the 1.83m limit. Grrh!

If I ask how do they refund me at the port-never an answer. I even get phone calls warning me that my car is over the 1.83m and I will be charged at the port and may not travel.

BF use a data system that is inflexible should a model have a range of heights. How my car ended up at 1.85m on the latest booking I will never know. Its not in the tech spec for the car.

I fully appreciate frivolity is difficult for you to take but smoking would hardly help anything here. This has been a thorn in my side every time I book. In effect I'm being charged for the air above my car due to BF using a data system that appears to assume the max height for some models.

Ask for it to be measured at the port and for it to be amended there if it's over. I know of plenty of times where this has happened. Politely insist that it is under, and for it to be checked at the port and say you will pay then if it is over. If you have no luck on the phone, put that request in writing. It happens regularly I'm sure, that's certainly the impression I get when talking to people.
