Replacement of Bretagne

Recommended Posts

The future of Bretagne is clarified according to this article in French :

https://www.lesechos.fr/industrie-services/air-defense/0301720190447-brittany-ferries-commande-deux-bateaux-pour-ses-lignes-anglo-espagnoles-2178784.php#formulaire_enrichi::bouton_google_inscription_article

"A fourth order is in sight. It concerns" Bretagne "Carried out in Saint-Nazaire at the Chantiers de l'Atlantique, which became STX, it has been operated by the company since 1989. The choice of the place of construction of its replacement should be known. during the first half of 2019. The Betagne Region will participate in its financing."

Replacement for Bretagne? Am slipping into depression already - so many happy and fond memories! Can the style really be repeated?  Armorique was such a disappointment with her 'plastic' interiors compared to her predecessors on the Plymouth route. 😡

This ship is turning 30 years old. But what a shock it will be when BAI will have to separate.
All I hope is that her successor will have a design that will remember this beautiful ship in tribute.

They will never build another Bretagne. She is a one off and could not be afforded thse days. Her replacement will most likely be a modified Armorique design with route flexibility.

Perhaps I'm biased, but I suspect Pont Aven will become her spiritual successor, in that regard.  Appropriate given the heavy inspiration taken from Bretagne

In a surprise move, I have heard that Bretagne will be smelted down and re-welded into 130,000 novelty steel bath-tubs, available online for fans.

:D

She couldn't be afforded at the time either - she was built for well below cost in order to steal the order from Govan.

I thought that was a myth as Govan had already began to specialise in tankers by 1989 after the takeover by Kvaerner the year before?

£50-70m seemed to be the going rate for luxurious cruise ferries at the time, not to mention the better value they got from the franc rather than sterling back then.

Cinderella only cost £75m back in 1989 and she's bigger and just as luxurious as Pont Aven.

Definitely not a myth - both Thatcher and Mitterrand were being kept informed of what became a fully-fledged diplomatic incident. The UK government's views of Christian Michelini by the end were robust to say the least!

Maybe although a build of the same scale to Pont Aven albeit will a different cabin configuration I think would be well received, balconies and all.

If you play with PA's cabins it's quite easy to come up with a pax bed total of around 1600 and you could keep the capacity to that.

As an example... lose around 20 outside 4 berths and 6 outside 4 berth clubs and turn them into a new 2 berth outside deluxe. You're removing capacity you don't need whilst tempting travellers with a similarly priced new cabin grade and the footprint remains the same. Again take out a cabin block and introduce the Club lounge in a similar way to what Barfy has.

Do you remember the pre-build renders of PA... they had the name "Bretagne 2" on the ship before Pont Aven was chosen!

It was the same for Mont St Michel, she was known as Normandie 2

I'd prefer something like Saint Goustan or what about Vieux Dinan? I think Cote de Granit Rose is a bit much though...

Only if BF had launched a ship called Bretagne 2, otherwise they can use Bretagne 2 again.

Yeah but like, spiritually, if the 'codename' was Bretagne 2, then clearly in BFs mind she was her replacement :)

I’d prefer it named after the founder or a past member of the fleet Kerisnel maybe.

If they were to name a new ship the Alexis Gourvennec, I think that would be fantastic.

Nice maybe but would mean nothing to the travelling public so not good marketing. The BF tradition is for geographical naming relavant to the areas they serve.

But really how much difference does the name make to bums on seats, you could still have the Breton character on board and it makes a nice marketing story .

Neil's idea of another Kerisnel is a good one, I also think past singular names, Coutances, Bénodet even Quiberon and Tregastel could be good contenders for the three new builds... How about another Val de Loire or maybe even a Chateaulin?

One thing's for sure, I'll be keeping a close eye as to when Bretagne sails for the final time, I can't miss out on that!

Maybe that's the appropriate time for a BFE members jolly?

In a long article in Le Marin, Jean-Marc Roué says that a Bretagne replacement is urgent, and that the sooner a contract is signed the better.

I would guess that the stakeholders are against a Chinese Bretagne, but as has been gone over many times, options closer to home are limited.

There is undoubtedly much emotion involved.

Be interesting to see the developments in this much as it’s nice to have new ships it’s what replaces Bretagne that may define BFs future another tarted up Chinese eflexer or a true Breton themed and designed cruise ferry even if it’s German built.
