Gareth Report post Posted October 21, 2018 And another - reports of an incident involving Red Falcon in Cowes this morning. Some reports indicating another collision with moored yachts, and some indicating the ferry aground.
cvabishop Report post Posted October 21, 2018 (edited) Reports that Red Falcon hit two yachts and ran aground this morning (21/10/18) whilst trying to berth at East Cowes in fog. BBC report here, others online. You can see on Marine Traffic that she is well off course! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-45932147 Edited October 21, 2018 by cvabishop

bekkia Report post Posted October 21, 2018 (edited) And in Fog again. Do the radars not work? https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/16997409.red-funnel-runs-aground-with-cries-of-people-heard-from-the-water/?ref=mr&lp=1 Edited October 21, 2018 by bekkia
Paully Report post Posted October 21, 2018 Yet another early morning `Bull in a china shop` escapade in fog. The question is why do the masters seem to carry on regardless instead of using descretion and abandoning the arrival/departure at Cowes.....or is this another example of intense commercial pressures forcing judgements to be suspended..Some suggestion that there are people in the water after the collision with RNLI mounting a large search... Lets hope all ends well..

DGodVSP Report post Posted October 21, 2018 Also on BBC news web site https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-45932147 I see they have crossed out Red and put in Green on the side of the ferry, is this Red Funnel's attempt at becoming more environmentally aware or are they just trying to justify when the are the wrong side of the shipping lane and keep crashing? Either way it just looks pathetic.

cvabishop Report post Posted October 21, 2018 Could be expensive given the way the Voith drives stick out beneath the hull.
bekkia Report post Posted October 21, 2018 (edited) Wow. Did they make a horrible navigation error and think the esplanade was the berth? I wonder if hitting the yachts and grounding saved a potentially nastier collision with the wall? It certainly looks very close. Screenshot from marine traffic, photo taken from iwcp. No doubt it's the RF response to Wightlink VoW. https://www.redfunnel.co.uk/en/corporate-info/media-pr/press-release-library/red-goes-green/ Now back on topic... cvabishop Report post Posted October 21, 2018 That's a big change of course. Maybe there was a technical fault?
Gareth Report post Posted October 21, 2018 Oddly, both sets of arrows are pointing away from the incident.
Khaines Report post Posted October 21, 2018 Not sure if anyone in high office from Red Funnel will come on her and say anything. James F would have probably said something, Fran Collins (former Condor) is CEO now. Not sure if she will post here. James probably would have given us the low down. She seems to have been slightly to the east of the normal course, hit the yacht and then turned and gone slowly astern until grounding.

Wightlink by investing in VoW is at least starting to move away from the use of fossil fuels. Yes she may be a hybrid and still use combustion engines some of the time but it should be seen as work in progress and a step in the right direction. Painting the word green on the side of a ferry doesn't do anything to reduce our reliance on oil based fuels. Rant over, back to topic (again)...... It's not just painting the word green on the side of the ferry. There have been changes to fuel, waste management etc. Granted it's not as good as hybrid but still steps in the right direction. Gareth Report post Posted October 21, 2018 One of the articles I’ve read about the incident seems to indicate that a yacht sank as a result of the collision.
cvabishop Report post Posted October 21, 2018 Yes, you can see the mast sticking out of the water in some images.
