Tanker - warship collision

Recommended Posts

Sorry, yes, mental aberation.  You are right, any way you look at it, the warship would have been the give-way vessel in a crossing situation.  😊

Tanker repeatedly called the warship and VTS warning of collision risk. Warship made one excuse then failed to avoid collision. Warship turned AIS on after collision. Tanker reported collision saying they though it was a warship.

Wouldnt want to be in the Commander and Officer of the watch`s shoes..Both will be looking for new careers soon..

Or worse.  I’d have thought this would be court martial territory.

Indeed.  Very well worth a read.

Some salient points:

Frigate had 134 people on board (all of whom escaped, as far as we know, unhurt).

It was not a crossing situation, it was a head-on reciprocal course situation.

Tanker (correctly) adjusted course to starboard, and told frigate to do the same. Frigate (unbelievably and inexplicably) adjusted to port (which good seamanship requires you should never do).

Tanker crew did not know (and were not told) the other vessel was a warship until after the collision.

Frigate crew seemed unaware that a collision had taken place!!

A lot of warships do what they want in my experience. They tend to put you in very difficult situations with no regard for your own manoeuvrability. This seems to be a good example of this. Makes a nice change for it to not be a US vessel.

Agree, 90/180 degree random turns, frequently changing speed, and a nightmare to get hold of on the radio, even when you do there's sometimes a long wait while the message gets passed down the line to the person actually driving the thing.

Only to throw my tuppence in, looking at that radar replay there's quite a few things that interest me.

Warship of course seems to have no idea what's going on. Poor tanker is boxed in unless they can crank round to starboard a bit more, bleating Rule 13 to those overtaking vessels hoping they're paying attention and also have space to get out the way a bit with that other southbound target. As it appears they were all passing pretty close too, that second overtaking vessel had to do a round turn anyway when the Sola hit the tanker as they nearly got taken out too in the whole thing.

I don't know the area, depth of water, etc, etc, disclaimer etc,  but from the radar replay, it looks rather narrow and the Sola looks to have taken a very close course to that western headland before the whole fun and games kicked off.

Incidentally, in that translated page, I didn't half enjoy this little snippet:

The unknown ship was clearly not accelerating — it was already moving before the speed vector appeared — only that its speed became fully visible in the radar within these 36 seconds (probably a stealth navigating feature turned off).

Edit to add - just realised the Sola came from the oil terminal - rendering half my point..pointless..doh!

Thanks for that update.

In a similar vein, here's what happens when you combine a Russian, alcohol and a large vessel. (I won't start a new thread just for this.)

Immaculate steering!  Right down the middle between the posts of the - er - selected passage!

If you look carefully at the wake someone on the bridge suddenly engaged reverse thrust so they couldn't all have been plastered - otherwise it would have been ten times worse!
