Arriving in Cherbourg on Sunday evening 14/4 - within the outer harbour wall when informed due to a technical problem we would be arriving 45 mins late - with that we sailed back out into the channel before turning round and trying agsin- what is going on?

Looking at the AIS track, it appears that Barfleur entered the outer harbour as usual by the Western entrance, and got to the point where the final turn to line up for the approach into the inner harbour would normally be made, before aborting the approach and heading out through the Eastern entrance.  Something clearly went wrong with one of the ship's systems that led to the decision to abort the berthing.  Whatever it was was pretty quickly fixed, or at least improvised, to enable a fairly swift about-turn and second attempt at the berthing.

If I was to hazard a guess, I would speculate about the bow thrusters (which are known to be problematic at Poole) - and maybe the delayed arrival might have been purely to allow time to muster tug support for the arrival.  But that's only a guess.
