Incident involving Pont-Aven 29 April 2019

Just before 04:00 this morning, crew on board Brittany Ferries Pont-Aven were alerted to a fire in the ship’s engine room. The incident occurred while Pont-Aven was sailing through the Bay of Biscay, on its crossing from Plymouth to Santander with a scheduled arrival time of 11:15 this morning. It took place approximately 100 nautical miles south of Brest at the time.

Brittany Ferries crews train regularly to deal with incidents at sea, and the company operates a dedicated fire incident training centre at its St Malo base in France. The crew immediately put this training into action brought the fire under control.

The ship is carrying 766 passengers with 142 staff and there were no injuries as a consequence of the incident.

The Prefecture Maritime in Brest have been informed and the vessel is now making way - under her own steam - for the port of Brest where comprehensive checks will be carried out. She is expected to arrive at around 16:00 today (29 April 2019).

Brittany Ferries would like to apologise to all passengers affected by this morning’s incident – and for the disruption to their onward journeys.

Pont-Aven entered service in 2004. She is the largest cruise-ferry in the Brittany Ferries fleet, carrying up to 2,400 passengers. She serves routes between France and the UK, France and Ireland and the UK and Spain.

According to Le Telegramme website, the fire broke out in one of her two engine rooms. The fire-fighters  helicoptered on board are staying to ensure there is no further flare up and to help with ventilating the area so the damage can be fully checked. She is running on just two of her four engines and a single shaft but may head for Roscoff to unload her passengers. There appears to be a container vessel on the ro-ro berth in Brest which may mean she can't unload there.

The news release says Brest at 16:00,maybe the vessel will have moved by then

I can't remember where the ro-ro berth is at Brest. Is it near the dry-docks – I don't remember it near the marina and the main waterfront?

What's in the dry-docks just now?

Yes, next door to the dry docks. There's nothing in the docks now but they need to offload the ship and presumably dry dock her after.

She may not need to do into dock. I think I've been told in the past that the two most common sources of fire in machinery spaces are lubricants and waste. If the surveyors say that there is no structural damage it may be possible to do repair work alongside. If so, that could save a day or so and a few thousand €€€s.

So it seems she's going to have an inspection (fire damage etc)...

She was under her own power to Brest, and from the reports posted; after being swiftly dealt with -  I would imagine not a significant amount of work to be done? Could she foreseeably be back on schedule by mid - week??

I think it's important that at this stage we do not speculate as to the potential cause of the fire. The good news is that no-one was injured, but the investigation process will only just be beginning.

Agreed - Well done to the crews for expertly extinguishing the fire before it ended up as an incident like the Quiberon.... As someone who has spent decades in the RNR, there is nothing more scary then a fire at sea, let’s all be sensible on here before going OTT with silly statements

Update from Brittany Ferries:

Following the incident that took place on board Pont-Aven this morning, the ship has now diverted towards the port of Brest in Brittany. The ship had departed Plymouth at 15:45 on Sunday 28th April and had been due to arrive in Santander, northern Spain at 12:15 local time today.

Pont-Aven is carrying 766 passengers and 142 crewmembers, and there were no injuries as a consequence of the incident.

The ship is now due to dock in Brest at around 15:00 local time this afternoon. On arrival, all passengers will be able to disembark. Those travelling in a vehicle will have the choice to cancel their booking with a full refund and to transfer to Plymouth on this evening’s 23:30 Roscoff to Plymouth sailing. Alternatively, if they opt to continue their journey to Spain by road they will receive a contribution to onward travel costs and compensation for the delayed arrival and inconvenience. Arrangements are also being made to allow those passengers travelling by foot to reach their destination.

 When the ship arrives in Brest, Brittany Ferries’ technical teams will embark and will commence a full investigation into the how the incident occurred, and to assess what repairs will be necessary and how long these will take.

 In the meantime Pont-Aven’s following sailings have been cancelled, and affected customers are being contacted so that alternative travel arrangements can be made:

  •  Monday 29th April, Santander to Portsmouth at 15:15
  •  Tuesday 30th April, Portsmouth to Santander at 17:15
  • Wednesday 1st May, Santander to Plymouth at 21:15

 Once again Brittany Ferries would like to offer its sincere apologies to all passengers affected by this morning’s incident.

Just picked up from another website that apparantly the Cap Finistere is going to do an additional run this week, leaving Santander on Thursday to try to clear some of the backlog.

In practice, this can only mean that her normal Bilbao sailing will also be calling at Santander?  CF does not have the capacity in her schedules to simply “do an additional run”.

What if she diverts to Plymouth on her way back up north? If she does that a couple of times, might that be enough to fit in an extra run? Ed.
