75 D Day celebrations Traffic Arrangements.

Recommended Posts

We shall be in Normandie fro the 75th D Day celebrations,

For anyone else who may be travelling to Ouistreham/Caen, the D-Day coast at that time,  or for the celebrations, as for the 70th, certain roads will be shut or restricted, and access to the Calvados coast will be restricted. Including the route from the Port to the city of Caen. I'm sure that nearer the time BF customer services will have advice for travellers.

in the meantime for anyone interested Further Information in English is here

BF only seemed to have switched one crossing to Cherbourg

06/06/19 Portsmouth to Caen 08:15 - Due to the closure of the port of Ouistreham on D-Day, this sailing will be diverted to CHERBOURG. Arrival will be at 14:30, local time. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause.

06/06/19 Caen to Portsmouth 16:30 - Due to the closure of the port of Ouistreham on D-Day, this sailing will now depart from CHERBOURG. Arrival will be at 21:15, local time. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause.

However the lorry restrictions are worse than the car ones:-

France: Vehicle Restrictions Travelling 6 June 2019

D-Day Celebrations:

A restriction will be in force to prohibit the movement of heavy goods vehicles of more than 7.5 tonnes during the commemorative ceremonies of the 75th anniversary of the D-DAY Landings.

It will cover the entire Calvados road network during the day of 6 June in order to preserve the fluidity and safety of the traffic, to facilitate the movement of the official motorcades and to ensure the access of the participants to the sites of Ceremonies.

Fuller details on what appears to be the French language version of pages of  my post  here

No flights from Caen Carpiquet ,AND an Air exclusion zone to includes Drones.

Fortress Calvados!, must be some important bods in town!

For us there is a certain Irony in the fact that our current prime minister's apparent last act in office will be to open a memorial at Ver sur mer, and go on  to remember publicly, the  sacrifice made to secure freedom and peace in Europe and the wider world,

Particularly as, to the detriment of everything else,  she has spent the whole of her premiership trying to escape the terrible place called Europe!

But the subtlety of all that is probably lost on all of them.☺️
