St Malo Gangway

Recommended Posts

For the benefit of those travelling on foot to St Malo, note that the gangway is currently being refurbished and is unavailable for use. Allow extra time for disembarkation via deck 3.

In St Malo we specialise in choosing bad times to do these things. Right next door, the visitors' pontoon A is being replaced. One month out of action and the 30+ permanent berth holders moved elsewhere in the marina. Why now? November is quieter, December even more so, January and February ideal....

Are they using the bus to get passengers onto Bretagne for the moment? If so, it may be that it's easier to get the bus on through her stern doors and turn it around (or reverse back out) than through the PA's bow doors as, if I remember correctly, she goes bow-in during the winter months. Ed.

OK. thanks. So it's not simply a bus access problem then. Perhaps they just don't like taking people onto PA on buses for some reason. Ed.

Foot passengers looked like they were bussed on when I travelled back from St Malo on 14th of this month

The picture does not paint (😀) this gangway in a flattering light, does it?!  Looks like it is more in need of replacement than refurbishment!

As far as I know only BF use it. You always walk into the Condor fast craft but maybe if there are any foot passengers on Clipper on Saturdays they also make use of the walkway. You never really see the state it's in from either the quayside looking up (as you go straight into the covered tunnel) or on board as it aligns with Bretagne's side door. Only on PA do you have to walk along the deck a short distance before crossing the gangway. I don't recall it being particularly good or bad on the inside as most often you are concentrating on wheeling a suitcase up or down. Ed.

Yes, that’s correct. it appeared that additional busses have been hired whilst the gangway is out of service to help minimise delays.

You would presume they would want to make sure any new one was compatible with whichever ship replaces Bretagne which might explain the reluctance to purchase a replacement.

True, but unlike the short-sighted new one at Poole, this one is versatile so it can be used with any ship.

(Provided, that is, it doesn’t need to go further forward than the end of the rails you can see in Andy’s second picture!)

The concession for the port is up for renewal with the CCI fighting a new private operator. Decision fairly soon. Could..... change many things.
