Reaction ferries

Recommended Posts

One of my students just told me about a type of ferry that is quite common on the Rhine river in Basel. It's called a 'reaction ferry' and after puzzling over what it could be I looked it up on Youtube. I found that there are several in Canada too.

If, like me, you've never heard of them, try to guess how they work before looking for the answer online.

The reaction to this is silence 😉😂

Correct! They don't have engines so make no mechanical noise.Ed.

I looked it up and found it very interesting. Certainly environmentally friendly too but you do apparently need a strong water flow. Maybe a couple of towers, one at Lymington and one at Yarmouth perhaps....
