Algarve and the current Covid status

Recommended Posts

I thought I would give you an update on how things are down in the Algarve after being here for a week.

We were on last Friday’s CF sailing Portsmouth to Santander after a late arrival into port 1830 as oppose to the quoted 1530 arrival when we left Portsmouth.

The ferry was very quiet, I would say 40% full and most things seemed safe with good precautions all the way through. The a le Carter restaurants and outside pool were closed but apart from that everything else was open, however we did stay in our cabin for most of the time.

We stopped overnight in Palencia which was a nice place to be. Again safe and mandatory to wear face masks everywhere included walking along the streets.

We have now been in our house for a week in the Algarve, and to be honest feel safer here than in the UK. Everyone seems to follow the guidance here and normality is almost as usual.

i must say though for August, it is very quiet and a noticeable absence of tourist especially the Brits. Mainly Portuguese, French and German touristI. It feels more like September/ October time.

Beaches are quiet and social distancing is very easy. When we go out at night we stick to bars and restaurants that we can sit outside to be safe.

Its compulsory to wear face masks in shops which seems to work fine. I just can’t see why the UK government are keeping Portugal off their list of safe countries to be in, there is nothing here we are concerned about and feel much safer than being in the UK.

So I do hope they see sense and lift the quarantine restrictions soon. We are heading back at the end of August and are considering changing our plans to drive back through Spain, and drive through Portugal up to northern Spain.

That trip back up through northern Portugal into Spain is a nice drive. We did it a few years ago now from our hideaway in Fuengirola, Costa del Sol through to the Algarve (Villamora and points west)  and up though Lisbon, Porto and across to Santander. Took a few stop overs and a necessary one in Leon to have our dog's passport sorted. Enjoy your trip and stay safe..
