Irish Ferries Epsilon - convoluted crossings

Recommended Posts

I know you shouldn't read below the line but there's some spectacularly stupid comments at the bottom of that article.

I imagine this is probably something to do with a part of the ship's safety or other equipment being out of commission or under maintenance, affecting her certificate permitting her to sail more than X miles from shore. So she's taking advantage of the Isle of Man to keep within whatever limits she is allowed to with in her current state.

Epsilon must have resolved the issue as she's listed to do her usual one weekend sailing to Cherbourg; hence the “no sailing” note on the Holyhead service.

She passed very close inshore to St David's in Wales last night and is hugging the south coast of England this morning before crossing over to Cherbourg so the issue may still be ongoing. Take a look at her track on MT.

Here is the track for a week, the Cherbourg route looks similar to the last time.

The last Holyhead crossing yesterday does not divert

That shows that the last trip from Cherbourg she took a funny course as well, the crossing this time is certainly different to normal.  Looking at the Holyhead to Dublin route, what was gained?  Going north she was virtually as far from land as she would be going straight across or for some reason did they want to stay in British waters for longer?

Being close to the Isle of Man was mentioned in a previous reply and thus not being further than x miles from land.

Solo is right. It must have been a very small difference in distance but it's difficult to see in the map.

Just did a quick check.

Holyhead to IOM  64 ml.

Holyhead Dublin 75 ml.

So not a lot of difference when you half those distances for distance from land, specially as she did not take a straight line to IOM but went further to the west.
