STENA LINE: Stena Discovery & Stena Explorer sold

Recommended Posts

Re: Stena Discovery & Explorer sold

Well, the news is - HSS Discovery has left her home at Harlands now - no signs of her anywhere else in the docks, so assume she is on her way

HSS Discovery appears to have finally left Holyhead and thus is now on her way to Venezuela

No worries.

By Infrastructure do you mean the berths? The berths are a specialised job.

I think so, thank you. As I know ports here don't have that yet

Absolutely no need to be - it's perfect!

Thanks!

I'm assuming she'd sail under her own "steam" as most HSC do.

Yes, she is sailing under her own power (loaded stores last week for the trip). Major stena re-shuffle also coming on the Irish Sea by the looks of it...

Ex Speed One? or Incat 067?

The only fastcraft I ever expect to come to Stena's Irish Sea services would be Stena Carisma, herself being replaced by a multi-purpose/ropax (maybe at once with the Danica). More so I just expect Stena's Irish Sea services to be completely fast-craft-free by next year.

A random thought, but it would be funny to get ex SF Manet on Fleetwood - Larne service. Obvisouly its a freight route, and she doesnt have the cabins required, but from a purley technically would she fit in Fleetwood?

Ferry site gives Stena Pioneer L = 140m T= 5.77m

Seafrance Manet L = 130m T = 4.98m

I think those are the main constraints for berthing in the Wyre Estuary, but im not sure.

WOW... I really don't like that, I'd rather prefer to be shipped over a cargo ship. To its a waste of engine's use which its not good because it shortens the useful life

Btw.. Somebody haves pictures of the inside of the HSS Discovery and Explorer? I'd love to see how the look in the inside

Re: Stena Discovery & Explorer sold

Latest rumours doing the rounds are Explorer will had off at the end of the year and will be replaced with Carisma, Stena Britannica will join the Adventurer in Dublin, and the Nordica will move to Fishguard (but there are doubts about her capacity)...

Re: Stena Discovery & Explorer sold

If stena get permission for the old house point development the HSS service will be withdrawn as stated in their non technical report - see www.lochryanport.co.uk

on the plans there is only plans for 1 2-tier linkspan which would suggest that they would operate at most 2 'slow' ships on the route.

The HSS Discovery left holyhead on wednesday afternoon i think it was and disappeared off the marinetraffic.com AIS then and havent seen it since. I dont think the AIS covers the south american coast so could be anywhere between here and there. which is a shame as would like to see what her route would have been to south america

Brittanica is of course available from the beginning of 2010, although original plans were to have her replace Stena Baltica / Finnarrow. If these rumours are true, then what would happen to the Poland and the Grena-Varberg routes? Maybe the new Seabridger-MK II ships have a place in these plans, since they are no longer needed on the Rotterdam service?

I guess all we know for sure, is that major changes in the Stena fleet are ahead.

Re: Stena Discovery & Explorer sold

Whislty on the subject, anyone know where the old berths from Harwich/Hoek are? Have they been sold with the Discovery?

As far as I know, the HvH one is still in its place, but I must admit I haven't been in HvH for about a year, and the non-google-streetview-system (that does show the entire Netherlands) we have at my work hasn't been updated last couple of months.

The two were brought to Belfast - one was refurbished and is now used at the new Stena Belfast terminal (Victoria Terminal 4) - this means one is spare, along with the old Belfast linkspan.

As for moving them to Venezuela - this would be so difficult and expensive might it not be more viable to make ship modifications or build new out there?

Re: Stena Discovery & Explorer sold

They are going to take a lot of the traffic from Conferrys. Even if they don't keep to time I imagine most people would rather be late on the HSS than on the alternative !
